Overview: Hayward 21rst Century Library and Community Learning Center
The City of Hayward has undertaken the design and construction of a state-of-the-art, 21st Century Library & Community Learning Center facility and the restoration of an historic civic plaza/arboretum. The project is currently in the design development phase. Groundbreaking is anticipated to take place in August, 2015.
The overall project includes the construction of a modern, three level, 58,000 square foot central library facility; significant streetscape modifications on the block where the new facility will be located; and the restoration of an historic civic plaza and arboretum located across the street from the new library.
The library facility and historic plaza/arboretum will be energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable to meet or exceed LEED Platinum certification standards. Among other sustainable design features, the new library facility will include a significant array of photovoltaic panels to meet the overall project goal of achieving Net Zero Energy certification. The principal project architect is Noll + Tam Architects, with landscape design by RHAA Landscape Architecture + Planning. Only thoughtfully selected, immaculately executed works of public art will be integral to the design of the new library and restored civic plaza/arboretum.
