The idea for the panel came about as I was trying to organize an art workshop and realized how challenging it was to develop a public program because my facilitator - who is a wonderful artist - had to juggle planning and meetings while raising her 5 kids! We talked about doing a new program that focused on artists that are parents and how being a mom effects and informs her work, how juggling schedules and her family's needs becomes a complex and highly personal dance. At this time I also found out that a friend of mine had co-edited a book called How We Do Both: Art and Motherhood! I am using her interview questions as a starting point for this panel discussion.
Here is a link to the book:
Local poet Nikia Chaney, who will be on the panel, has written a nice piece for the Inlandia/Press Enterprise blog on the topic:
The panel is called ART+MOTHERHOOD: An Artist Panel
It will take place on Sunday July 28th, at The Riverside Art Museum
Carolyn Schutten will moderate this panel.
This will be an opportunity for the artists to introduce themselves and to respond to 3 questions which will be given to all participants ahead of time. Then the moderator will pose a question of her own before we open the discussion up to the public.
The 3 prepared questions are:
How do you logistically balance art making and motherhood?
Does your art making require a room of one's own?
Did having children enhance your creativity?
